How to Access the Westell Modem Management Software

  1. Plug your computer into one of the Ethernet plugs in the back of the modem using an Ethernet cable. NOTE: We do not recommend making any changes to the wireless network from a wireless connection.
  2. Open a browser window
  3. Type http://192.168.1.1 in the address bar (this is the default IP address for the Westell modem. In some cases this address may not be correct. You will need to call the ZoomTown help desk to troubleshoot further if this address does not give you access to the modem)
  4. The Westell Modem software will be displayed

How to Access and Configure the Firewall settings

  1. Click on "Configuration" at the top of the page and scroll down to "Firewall"
  2. Click on "Firewall". The Firewall security level table will be displayed.
  3. We recommend for most networks you use the "low" or "medium" setting.
  4. Click the "Save" button at the bottom of the page.

How to locate the serial number on your modem.

You will need to know the serial number because by default the SSID for your Westell modem will be your serial number. You will need to enter the SSID into the client software for your wireless card, when setting up your network.

  1. Click "About" at the top of the page. A table with the serial number will appear.
  2. Write the serial number of the modem down for future reference. NOTE: the "Z" in the serial number must be Capitalized

How to enable Wireless Network on my modem

Please note that configuration of the wireless network requires that both the modem and the wireless card client software configurations match.

  1. Click on "Configuration" at the top of the page, and scroll down to "Wireless".
  2. Click on "Basic" from the wireless selection. The Wireless Configuration window will be displayed.
  3. Wireless operation should be set to "enabled".
  4. The SSID will be the same as the modem serial number by default. Do not change this setting.
  5. If you are experiencing poor signal quality, you may wish to try changing your channel setting.
  6. For security, you may wish to select "enabled" in the Hide SSID field. By selecting enabled, your network does not broadcast its existence and can only be found by users who have their computer configured to access your network.
  7. Do not change any of the other settings.
  8. Click the "Save" button at the bottom of the page for your changes to take effect.

How to enable my wireless network on my wireless card Client

Each manufacturer has their own wireless card software. You will need to follow your manufacturers instructions. Here are some things to check if you are having difficulty.

  1. Make sure the SSID is set to the serial number of your modem. (see above)
  2. Make sure the Z in the serial number is capitalized.
  3. Make sure the wep encryption matches in both your client software and your modem software. The modem by default will be "disabled".
  4. Make sure the connection is configured for Infrastructure mode. (Ad oc will not work)
  5. If you make any changes to your software you will need to restart your computer and web browser for them to take effect.
