FAQs

What can I expect with my wired devices?

Cincinnati Bell delivers up to 1 Gbps to your home, not each device. Factors that may impact speed are computer hardware including the network interface card, processor, and RAM; Computer software including anti-virus and browsers; Inside wiring; and Cincinnati Bell Network and Internet limitations and congestion. It is also important to note Cat 5e and Cat 6 are standard for gigabit services. Anything less would not be able to accommodate such speeds.

What can I expect with my wireless devices?

While you will not achieve gigabit speeds via WiFi and your Wireless device, you will have the ability to experience much faster speeds than other providers in the Greater Cincinnati market. To gain the fastest speeds possible a wired connection in recommended. The current wireless modems will allow for speeds up to 75 Mbps and those speeds will depend on the wireless device you are using to connect to the internet.

What is recommended for use with 1 Gbps?

1Gbps Internet service is so fast that some much older computers may not be able to process all of the available data as fast as Fioptics transmits it – leading to slower speeds. In order to take full advantage of 1Gbps speeds, you’ll need a computer, laptop, or portable device that supports a gigabit (1Gbps 1000BaseT network interface card).

The good news is that most new computers and laptops already support gigabits speeds! See the table below to find out if your PC or MAC is compatible with 1Gbps.

WINDOWS 7 MAC OS 10.6 (or higher)
Processor Speed 2.0 GHz Intel Core
Duo/Athlon II or faster
2.0 GHz Intel Core 2
Duo or faster
Memory 2 GB 2 GB
Hard Drive Space 3 GB 3 GB
Ethernet Gigabit Ethernet Gigabit Ethernet
Browser IE 8 (or newer)
Firefox 24 (or newer)
Safari 5.1.1 (or newer)
Google Chrome 31 (or newer)

Google Chrome 31 (or newer)

For speeds over 100Mbps:

Alternate hardware and operating systems that use the Internet will work with this service; however, testing has shown that other devices and operating systems are unable to attain the full provisioned rate of broadband speed.

Actual speeds may vary depending on the number, performance, and configuration of the following:

  • Connected PC or connecting PCs
  • Hardware (Processor (Single Core, Multi Core), RAM, Hard Drive (write speed capabilities)
  • Router and connecting adapters (Gigabit Ethernet required for speeds greater than 100 Mbps)
  • Software applications running in the background on the device
  • Web Browser/Browser Plug-ins (Flash/Java)
  • Website/Server Limitations (Not all speed test sites are capable of testing speeds greater than 100 Mbps)
  • Cincinnati Bell Network Congestion

For optimal performance, consult your equipment manufacturer/software developer for required upgrades, configuration updates, or troubleshooting guides.

If you’re not sure whether your computer or laptop supports these speeds, consult your computer documentation and look for the following terms:
1000BaseTx | 1000Mbps | 1Gbps | GigE

High-Speed Internet Service Policies

*100 times faster claim based on avg. download connection speeds for United States, Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana, as reported by Akamai Technologies Inc.’s 2014 Q1 “State of the Internet” report. Upload and download speeds are not symmetrical. Ridiculous claim is based on how ridiculously fast it can be. Speed can be slowed by older customer hardware or interface cards, slower external websites, network congestion, or other-than-physical connection to modem (most wireless modems and cellular devices could explode into flame before attaining 1Gbps; physical connection of device to modem will yield best results.)
