How do I optimize my speed? The difference between wired vs wireless connection.

Wired Connection

A direct wired connection to your computer or device by connecting an Ethernet cable directly to the wireless gateway will provide the fastest speed your network can deliver.

Wired connections have higher bandwidth than Wi-Fi connections. When connected by Ethernet cable, a lot of data can move quickly and directly between your computer and wireless gateway. On the other hand, Wi-Fi radio signals travel through the air and often run into interference from objects or other signals. This means that less information can be transmitted between a Wi-Fi device and router, resulting in slower Internet speeds.

Wireless Connection

Wi-Fi connection tends to be more convenient for users, allowing to move away from the wireless gateway. The wireless connection can have a negative impact on the signal and results of speed.

Wi-Fi is obviously more convenient than wired Ethernet cables. You probably won’t be connecting an Ethernet cable to your smartphone any time soon, but it matters when dealing with desktop PCs, laptops at desks, game consoles, TV-streaming boxes, and other Internet devices. When possible, Cincinnati Bell always recommends a wired (or Ethernet) connection for optimal speeds and performance. Your Wi-Fi speed depends on several factors, such as the age of your computer or other devices, your devices’ wireless standards, the devices distances from your waireless gateway, the number of devices connected at once, interference from other electrical equipment/devices, interference from your neighbor’s home network, and objects in the way (i.e. home and wall construction, furniture, etc.). It is very difficult to quantify interference, and the average consumer is unable to do so without special equipment or applications.
