Wired Connection

A direct wired connection to your computer or device by connecting an Ethernet cable directly to the wireless gateway will provide the fastest speed your network can deliver.

Wired connections have higher bandwidth than Wi-Fi connections. When connected by Ethernet cable, a lot of data can move quickly and directly between your computer and wireless gateway. On the other hand, Wi-Fi radio signals travel through the air and often run into interference from objects or other signals. This means that less information can be transmitted between a Wi-Fi device and router, resulting in slower Internet speeds.

Wireless Connection

Wi-Fi connection tends to be more convenient for users, allowing to move away from the wireless gateway. The wireless connection can have a negative impact on the signal and results of speed.

Wi-Fi is obviously more convenient than wired Ethernet cables. You probably won’t be connecting an Ethernet cable to your smartphone any time soon, but it matters when dealing with desktop PCs, laptops at desks, game consoles, TV-streaming boxes, and other Internet devices. When possible, Cincinnati Bell always recommends a wired (or Ethernet) connection for optimal speeds and performance. Your Wi-Fi speed depends on several factors, such as the age of your computer or other devices, your devices’ wireless standards, the devices distances from your waireless gateway, the number of devices connected at once, interference from other electrical equipment/devices, interference from your neighbor’s home network, and objects in the way (i.e. home and wall construction, furniture, etc.). It is very difficult to quantify interference, and the average consumer is unable to do so without special equipment or applications.

The speed or bandwidth of your Internet service depends on the following:

  1. Speed/Product ordered from Cincinnati Bell
  2. Type of transport delivering the service to your home (i.e. Copper or Fiber)
  3. Number of devices/users simultaneously using the Internet
  4. Depending on if you are measuring wired or wireless speeds
  5. Environmental factors
  6. Other conditions

If two people are surfing the Net at the same time, they would equally share the bandwidth. However, since different applications utilize different amounts of bandwidth at different times, it is unlikely general surfing is noticed.  However, streaming video could slow the connection down.  In general, the more simultaneous devices using the Internet require more bandwidth for optimal performance. A data cap is limiting the transfer of a specified amount of data over a period of time, usually a month. While other Internet service providers in your area may cap your data, Cincinnati Bell does NOT cap or limit the amount of data you can send or receive with your Internet service.

With Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH), we deliver Fioptics Internet or video service through a fiber network that extends all the way to the customer’s home. A large majority of our deployments are FTTH. In the case of Fiber-to-the-Node, we deliver Fioptics Internet or video service through a fiber network that extends all the way to a box outside of the customer’s home. The Fioptics service is then delivered from the box to the customer’s location over our copper network. Both Fiber-to-the-Node and Fiber-to-the-Home utilize our fiber technology to deliver superior video and internet service.

What is Fioptics 1 Gbps Internet? Why would I want 1 Gbps?

1 Gbps Internet service is so fast that some computers that are significantly older may not be able to process all of the available data as fast as Fioptics transmits it – leading to slower speeds. In order to take full advantage of 1 Gbps speeds, you’ll need a computer, laptop, or portable device that supports a gigabit (1 Gbps 1000BaseT network interface card).

The good news is that most new computers and laptops already support gigabits speeds! See the table below to find out if your PC or MAC is compatible with 1 Gbps.

For speeds over 100 Mbps:
Alternate hardware and operating systems that use the Internet will work with this service; however, testing has shown that other devices and operating systems are unable to attain the full provisioned rate of broadband speed.

Actual speeds may vary depending on the number, performance, and configuration of the following:

  • Connected PC or connecting PCs
  • Hardware (Processor (Single Core, Multi Core), RAM, Hard Drive (write speed capabilities)
  • Router and connecting adapters (Gigabit Ethernet required for speeds greater than 100 Mbps)
  • Software applications running in the background on the device
  • Web Browser/Browser Plug-ins (Flash/Java)
  • Website/Server Limitations (Not all speed test sites are capable of testing speeds greater than 100 Mbps)
  • Cincinnati Bell Network Congestion

For optimal performance, consult your equipment manufacturer/software developer for required upgrades, configuration updates, or troubleshooting guides.

If you’re not sure whether your computer or laptop supports these speeds, consult your computer documentation and look for the following terms:

  • 1000 BaseTx
  • 1000 Mbps
  • 1 Gbps
  • GigE

To find out if your computer supports a 1 Gbps Internet connection, follow the directions below.


  1. Open the System Control Panel and select Device Manager.

    NOTE. If you do not see the Computer icon in the Device Manager, click START and then select Computer.

  2. Click the arrow to the left of Network Adapters. A list of network adapters will appear.

    NOTE. Ignore any Bluetooth® devices listed.

You may be able to tell the speed capability of the network interface card (NIC) by its name. For example, in “Intel® PRO/1000 MT Network Connection,” the “1000” tells you that it is capable of 1000Mbps (1Gbps). If you are not sure, use your favorite search engine to look up the name of your NIC. Generally, you can find the speed capability in any description you find for that card.


  1. Click the APPLE icon in the menu bar (upper left-hand corner) and select About This Mac.
  2. In the ABOUT THIS MAC dialog box, click More Info.
  3. In the new dialog box, click Support in the upper right-hand corner to see your OS X and Macintosh resource information.
  4. In the MACINTOSH RESOURCES section, click Specifications.
  5. In the TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS dialog box, review the specifications to find the speed of your Mac’s Ethernet interface card.

If you find “Gigabit Ethernet” or “10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet,” your NIC is gigabit-capable. If you find “10/100baseTx Ethernet,” your NIC is not gigabit-capable.

NOTE. MacBook Airs do not have Ethernet ports, so their specifications have no references to “Ethernet.” However, you can connect a MacBook Air to Ethernet with a dongle. In this case, the speed depends on which type of USB you have and the Ethernet speed supported by the dongle.

If your MAC does not have a built-in Ethernet interface card, it may be possible to purchase a USB Gigabit Ethernet adapter. USB3 is required to achieve full gigabit speeds. Contact your manufacturer for more details.


Many Chromebook models do not come with an Ethernet interface card. If your Chromebook does not have a built-in Ethernet interface card, it may be possible to purchase a USB Gigabit Ethernet adapter. USB3 is required to achieve full gigabit speeds. Contact your manufacturer for more details.
