Ookla analyzed Speedtest data from Cincinnati Bell's Fioptics Internet service over a six-month period in making the determination.

Cincinnati Bell's Fioptics Internet is powered by the company's growing fiber network that currently covers 50 percent of Greater Cincinnati. The fiber network also supports Cincinnati Bell's "Light Up Cincinnati" initiative, which launched in 2014 with the introduction of Fioptics gigabit Internet for consumers and small businesses. Gigabit Internet is 10 to 100 times faster than average broadband speeds.

Ookla, the Seattle-based company which powers the web site Speedtest.net, analyzes results from more than 50 million speed tests every month on Internet Service Providers from around the world. The company noted Cincinnati Bell's gigabit service in its announcement about Cincinnati's fastest Internet Service Provider.

"It's the gigabit offering that makes Cincinnati Bell stand apart in our ratings," the company said.

High-speed Internet is an important asset for small businesses that are adopting cloud-based service models and supporting mobile workforces. Consumers, meanwhile, are increasing their bandwidth consumption by 30-40 percent a year as they bring more smart devices into the home and expect seamless connectivity.

"This recognition from Ookla offers additional validation of our decision to build out a fiber network across Greater Cincinnati," said Christi Cornette, senior vice president of marketing for Cincinnati Bell.

"We are committed to giving our customers a great experience every time they interact with Cincinnati Bell, and that means offering reliable, fast and accessible technology."
